Shaab Umm Usk

Overview

Shaab Umm Usk is a crescent-shaped reef, open to the south, which encloses a particularly protected lagoon in its interior. This is an excellent place for a one-day stay during the cruise.

Description

The lagoon is famous for the resident bottlenose dolphins, which, if they are not disturbed and therefore move away, can be observed as they perform maneuvers worth seeing.

The lagoon is protected in all weather conditions, not least because of the isolated coral formations at the southern tip that limit the wave action.

The most suitable spot for diving is in the southwest, behind the coral reef.

Hotspots

  • However, the most interesting part is in the southeast, but it is recommended only in good sea conditions.
  • The dive described here is the second of the two: After mooring in the lagoon, you need a dinghy to take you to the outside.
  • After leaving the lagoon, head counterclockwise around the coral reef ring to the middle of the east side. Here the reef drops down to a shallow zone. This is the first step, located at a depth of 18-20 meters.
  • The current mainly comes from the southern direction; therefore, it is necessary to always keep close to the reef wall, which, moreover, is particularly blessed with abundance of life.
